Should I Major in Journalism
Should I Major in Journalism Inquiring minds want to know what is it like to major in journalism? Well, if youve got one of those particularly inquisitive minds, this area of study would probably fit you perfectly. A field where the sole purpose is to learn about new things and share them with the world, students who are naturally curious and determined to get answers to open questions should be more than ready to take this on. Certain challenges come along with it, however. Obstacles regarding boundaries and knowing when to keep reaching and when to recognize limits are explored. Depending on the area of journalism you want to go into, various skills concerning writing and/or broadcasting are covered as well. Is this a world you can handle? Skills Needed: Journalists basically need to be unafraid. Hounding sources to get stories completed, especially when those sources dont want to speak to you, is a huge effort that demands persistence on a whole new level. Students who wish to study journalism must be prepared to go to extreme lengths for answers and never get nervous and if you do get nervous, you need the strength to push it aside and keep moving anyway. All of this may make journalism seem like an exhausting and dangerous marathon, but there are some calm aspects of it, too. Youll have to do your fair share of research to thoroughly comprehend the background behind stories before you tackle them. Your classes will give you endless opportunities to prove your attentive research skills, bravery, and genuine curiosity. You may also want to check out these tips on things to focus on as a journalism major. Lessons Learned: Being a journalism major will teach you how to spot a really good story. Reporters are not always assigned pieces in fact, they are more often asked to pitch their own. Coming up with a solid pitch is a tactic that takes time to understand. Journalism classes will help you discover what you should be looking for on a regular basis and what separates an incredibly intriguing story idea from a mundane one. You want to find ideas that people will want to read/hear about, not ideas that will just get you by for another week. Majoring in journalism also means you will learn how to structure stories. There is a method to hooking your audience in and then keeping them engaged, plotting the right amount of quotes and facts at the right times. Moreover, a very specific type of writing is used - not the typical style you use in English essays or learn through formal writing tutoring. Finally, you will learn interviewing skills how to come up with the best questions that will get the best answers out of people, how to deal with people who dont want to talk at all, how to land great interviews in the first place, etc. Together, all of these lessons will go hand-in-hand and eventually show you what being a journalist is all about. Post-Grad Opportunities: It has never been the best-paying market, but there are certainly several positions out there. Many of them arent glamorous, and often your first journalism job out of college will not be at all glamorous, but it will be something. Signing up to be a reporter means you will, in fact, be reporting. You could do stories for a small business journal, website articles for a T.V. station, advertorials for a magazine what most aspiring journalists end up doing to get started is freelance writing. This can get you the opportunity to be published in a variety of places the catch is, you will get paid little to nothing. Yet, thats the main road to kicking off a journalism career. Its all about getting your byline out there and eventually getting picked up by the right publication. If you are hoping to be a T.V. reporter, start searching for tiny markets. Random stations you probably never have heard of will be more likely to take on someone like you who is fresh out of school and has never officially been on T.V. before. Just make sure you have taped some good reels of your broadcasting skills so you can show them what youre made of. The journalism field, like many other fields, is about working your way up. Impress the right person, however, and you may get pushed up the promotional ladder quicker than you thought. Identifying parts of expressions
Identifying parts of expressions There are different types of algebraic expressions in math. An expression can consist of different variables, numbers and exponents. Variable is denoted by a letter such as (x, y, z, m, n.).The exponent is the power of the number or the variables. The exponent tell the number of times the base variable or number is to be multiplied. The number multiplied to the variable is called the coefficient of the variable. The degree of the expression is the highest exponent of the variable in the expression. Example 1: Identify the degree, coefficient, variable of the expression 10x3? Solution: Here the given algebraic expression is 10x3. The coefficient of the expression is = 10 The variable of the expression = x. The exponent of the variable x is = 3. The given expression is a monomial expression as the there is only one term in the expression. The degree of the expression is = 3. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) Which of the following is a polynomial expression? a) 5b b) 6b + 1 c) 20 d) None of these. Correct answer: option b. Explanation: A polynomial expression as an expression which has more than one terms. The expression 6b + 1 has two terms. Here 6b is one of the terms and 1 is the second term of the expression separated by an addition sign. The variable of the expression is = b. The coefficient of the variable = 6. The exponent of the variable b = 1. The constant number for the given expression = 1

Is Going Back to School Your Best Path to Career Growth - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Is Going Back to School Your Best Path to Career Growth - Introvert Whisperer Is Going Back to School Your Best Path to Career Growth? Whether you are a job seeker or simply in your career and pondering your next career move, you might be considering going back to school. Returning to school to pursue a degree to be more career competitive is a commonly held belief. Butâ¦.is it really the right thing to do? For those out there aghast for questioning the wisdom of schooling or education, let me assure you that Iâm a perpetual student myself. In fact, I think we should all continue to improve ourselves. The bigger question is around setting your expectations about what you are pursuing and whether or not your expectations can actually be met. Here are some tips and things for you to consider: Clarity is critical. Do your research. You need to understand the requirements for the type of position you desire to move into. Too many people think they know the path from where they are to the career of their dream without doing their homework to know for sure. You donât want to invest both time and money without first confirming you are on the right path. Specific degrees lead to specific careers. There are programs out there that have a direct correlation to the career you would pursue, such as engineering or nursing. Certainly, if those professions are your direction, you should go for them in a big way. It also doesnât hurt that both areas are in high demand right now in this tough economy. Non-specific degrees require you to know your direction. Degrees in Environmental Studies or Business Administration are open to your own interpretation of what career you can pursue. Way too many people exit these programs without any concept of what career it might support. If you are looking into a program that is more general, identify if there are specialization programs within those degrees that could guide you directly into your next career step. An MBA degree is no guarantee of a management position. Most companies want to grow you into a management position. The reason for this is they want to ensure you know âhow things workâ before allowing you to direct the work of others. Deep experience and a willingness to take responsibility are characteristics that will move you into management. Course content does not equal work content. Donât be fooled into believing that the types of classes you take in a program are the same type of work you would be doing professionally. When you study law, the environment for practicing law is very different and sometimes a surprise. Building new skills can help you progress. If you are simply pursuing various classes to up-level your skill in specific things related to your profession, that is a great course of action. You already know the demands on you professionally and can see where the opportunities for growth exist. Going after specific classes to help your growth can make sense. Your challenge, once youâve done that is to see to it that you get work assignments to help solidify your new skills. You still have to do your own self-promotion around your new skills or no one will know. If youâre pursuing a degree program to get promoted or go after a better position, make sure to check your expectations against the reality of the hiring situation. In our environment, employers are no longer just looking for a degree. They are looking for specific expertise, specialization, and depth of experience. Angle Of Depression Problems - Online Tutoring
Angle Of Depression Problems - Online Tutoring If an observer is looking at an object located at a height lower than the observer, then the angle formed by the observer along the line of sight with the horizontal line is called the Angle of depression. Angle of depression can be evaluated by using the trigonometric functions like sine, cos or tan and calculating their values accordingly. Example 1: Evaluate the angle of depression if the observer standing on top of a building is at a height of 12m above the ground is looking at an object on the ground. The horizontal distance between the observer and the object is 24m. Given height above the ground = 12m Distance of the car from the observer = 24m Let the angle of depression = Then from the diagram, alternate angles are equal. Hence the angle below ?OBA as shown is also = Now in triangle OAB, tan= OA/AB = 12/24 = 1/2 Hence angle of depression, = tan-1(1/2) = 26.57 Example 2: Find the angle of depression when an observer on a building at a height of 30m above the ground is looking at a car on the ground which is 60m away along the line of sight. Given height above the ground = 30m Distance of the car on the ground from the observer along the line of sight = 60m Let the angle of depression = Then, sin = Opposite side/Hypotenuse = 30/60 = 1/2 Hence angle of depression, = sin-1(1/2) = 30.
Graduation Rates Of Athletes
Graduation Rates Of Athletes Practice, class, practice, class, practice, homework, class, clubs/organizations, homework, game, practice, class, homework, projects, practice game and then maybe laundry goes the schedule of collegiate athletes. Compare that to a typical full-time students schedule of class, homework, clubs/organizations and of course maybe laundrymaybe. A student athletes schedule is more demanding than a typical students. However, N.C.A.A. student athletes are now graduating at record rates, higher rates than other students, according to the N.C.A.A.s annual release on graduations figures, cited by an article in The New York Times. The N.C.A.A.s release stated that 79 percent of Division I student athletes beginning their freshmen years in between the 2000/2001 and 2003/2004 school years acquired a degree within six years. The latest entering class beginning in 2003/2004 school year reached the 79 percent mark, matching the record high of the two previous years. The federal graduation statistics were different, however. These statistics showed this years student athletes only graduate at a 64 percent mark, which was higher than the overall student bodys numbers at 63 percent. The N.C.A.A. uses its own statistics, separate from federal numbers. The New York Times stated that student athletes typically graduate higher than the overall student body. Division I football and basketball student athletes still have the lowest graduation figures of all athletes. However, they are performing better in the classroom and graduating at now higher percentages. Scholarships could be the factor that is helping student athletes graduate at higher percentages than the overall student body. Many students drop out of college or fail to complete their degrees because of financial constraints. Most but not all student athletes receive full scholarships as long as they meet specific grade requirements. These full scholarships create stronger incentives and more opportunities for athletes to stay in college. Also, the N.C.A.A. has demonstrated a strong commitment to increasing its student athletes graduation figures.
Improving Mental Maths with Tas from the Tutorfair Foundation
Improving Mental Maths with Tas from the Tutorfair Foundation One of the Foundationâs most prolific volunteers, Tas F, has set up Arithmetic Intelligence - an elite Maths club aimed specifically at elevating the arithmetic capabilities and mental Maths skills in young learners. We asked Tas to tell us more about Arithmetic Intelligence... What is Arithmetic Intelligence? âIn my experience as a Maths tutor,â says Tas, âit is vital for learners to master arithmetic operations as it helps them to build a strong foundation in Maths, especially from a very young age.â With numeracy, we know that confidence is key. Helping learners to feel at ease with Maths helps them come to enjoy the subject and never feel threatened by it. Arithmetic Intelligence teaches learners to approach problems through visualisation rather than memorisation, helping to boost confidence by enabling them to work arithmetic operations mentally at speed. âSo often, students will memorise a formula without knowing how and when to apply it to a problem. By learning to visualise problems, learners are able to decipher the relevant mathematical concepts at play and find their way to a solution much more quickly.â The clubâs Maths practice is underpinned by two very successful methods of Maths that arenât usually taught to students in the UK. These are Japanese Soroban (Abacus) Maths and Singaporean Maths. Using these methods, âstudents acquire and apply mathematical concepts and methods that they actually enjoy using, often developing a keen interest in Maths as a result.â So what do we know about these methods? Soroban (Abacus) Maths The Soroban (Abacus) is a calculating board that has been widely used in Japan, China and Korea since time immemorial. With the help of the Soroban board, students develop a profound understanding of place value, building strong conceptual foundation to underpin their learning. Thereafter, students are able to visualise numbers and perform advanced arithmetic operations mentally and with great ease. Myriad research has established that students who use the abacus not only develop stronger mental Maths skills, but also improve their ability to concentrate, memorise information and solve problems. Singapore Maths Developed in the 1980s, the Singapore method aims to help children solve Maths problem with visual aids â" either concrete materials or pictorial aids. Also known as the CPA, the Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach to learning suggests that learners develop mathematical thinking by understanding how something works â" not by memorising formulae. Starting by solving simple word problems, learners are taught to use visualisation and pictorial concepts to find solutions, gradually applying and developing their mathematical thinking to process more and more complex stimuli. Tas is proud to say that, using the advanced arithmetic skills and problem-solving abilities learned during Arithmetic Intelligence classes, many of her students have won certificates of excellence in Maths at their respective schools If youâd like to find out more about Arithmetic Intelligence, you can visit the website here
